Computing

Intent

In Computing we learn skills for life! Computational thinking is a structured approach to tackling problems in a systemic way, a skill that can be applied to all subjects and life problems. Digital literacy and computing skills are a key part of school, work and daily life.  Effective, use of these skills will enhance students’ involvement with the outside world.  

In Key Stage 3 students will learn about and understand the main components of everyday devices that they use.  Students will learn to use social media and on-line resources efficiently and effectively and understand how to keep themselves and their data safe.

In Key Stage 4 students will learn about a variety of topics and areas. They will learn how to identify a problem and look at ways of finding a solution to address it in a logical way. Creativity is another skill that students will be encouraged to use as it goes hand in hand with problem solving.  Students will learn that coming up with solutions to problems is almost never a straightforward process, out-of-the-box thinking is often required.

Objectives

Our curriculum is organised in such a way that provides our students with the opportunity to learn expected behaviours and be successful in their learning so that we can achieve our #LiveLoveLearn mission.  Our strategic intent is therefore very simple – the curriculum:

  • Provides a diverse and powerful range of knowledge, which will allow the students to build and develop the skills and tools required to function effectively in today’s technology driven society.
  • It will allow all the students to enjoy their learning and experience success in this area.
  • The curriculum will take into account individual needs and learning styles.
  • Creates a culture of high expectation and aspiration.
  • Develops confident and responsible individuals who can make a positive contribution to society and live safely both in the real and the online world.

Implementation: Design

The Key Stage 3 curriculum will provide students with a range of skills covering use of popular productivity software to computer programming and advanced problem solving.  It will ensure the students are digitally literate equipping them with the skills and knowledge to use technology effectively and for their own benefit, but more importantly – safely. 

At Key Stage 4, students will cover three main areas; Computer Systems, Computational thinking and Programming.  These will be taught in an interlinked manner and where possible topics will relate back to real-world scenarios.

Whilst undertaking tasks in lessons and independent learning, students will learn resilience. Resilience is a key skill in computing and the students will understand that they are most likely going to fail before they succeed, and that this is not a reflection on themselves but of the process itself.
