Intent

In Maths we want students to become mathematically fluent, to be able to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately in order to prepare them for life in the 21st century.  We want our students to develop their logical processing skills, to solve problems in both abstract and concrete contexts, so they can apply these skills across disciplines. 

In Key Stage 3, students will be given the opportunity to explore different low-entry, high ceiling tasks in order to develop their mathematical problem solving and reasoning skills as well as their creativity. In Key Stage 4, we will build upon the skills learned in Key Stage 3 and apply those to both abstract mathematical contexts as well as how mathematics links to the wider world. 

In Year 9, we will initially focus on data presentation and analysis, to ensure students have the necessary skills to apply them across the wider curriculum.  There will also be a focus on reasoning and problem solving, as we prepare students for life after Royds.

Objectives

Our curriculum is organised in such a way that provides our students with the opportunity to learn expected behaviours and be successful in their learning so that we can achieve our #LiveLoveLearn mission.  Our strategic intent is therefore very simple:

  • Provides a diversity of powerful knowledge and mathematical skills, which cumulatively builds to provide the mathematical literacy that enables students to function in society.
  • Enables all students to enjoy learning and experience success in mathematics.
  • Takes into account individual needs
  • Creates a culture of high expectation and aspiration to raise standards of attainment and progress.
  • Develops confident and responsible individuals who can make a positive contribution to society and live safely and independently.

 

Implementation: Design

Across the key stages, in mathematics we will focus on small-steps planning to ensure all skills are explicitly taught and misconceptions addressed.  We use a variety of low stakes testing methods in order to monitor progress of our students and ensure skills are embedded.  The flow of topics has been carefully considered to give as many opportunities for interleaving and spacing as possible.  Our expectation is that this will give students the confidence to ‘dream big’ in mathematics and strive for excellence. 

In Key Stage 3 our students will work around a mastery-based curriculum with inbuilt rich tasks to give students the experience of forming mathematical arguments and reasoning at all levels of attainment.  The curriculum is designed to allow students to use their initiative, build their resilience and reflect on their progress. As students move to Key Stage 4 they will build on their embedded skills as we ensure they continue to develop their fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills in order to be successful in their GCSE exam and life after Royds.  Where appropriate, the scheme will reflect skills students need in the real world as the Maths is presented in a real life context.

HegartyMaths is one of the best ways for your child to learn maths on their own at home.

  1. Every single topic in school maths (850+) is explained in 10 minute video tutorials designed and delivered by, Mr Colin Hegarty. Mr Hegarty is an-award winning teacher who won UK Teacher of the Year 2014 and was nominated in the top 10 teachers in the 2016 Global Teacher Prize.  Your child does not have to feel stuck at home as Mr Hegarty can explain any topic to them.
  2. After every video, HegartyMaths, has an assessment with questions covering everything taught in the video so students can practise and ensure they understand the maths Mr Hegarty just presented.
  3. HegartyMaths records everything your child ever does on the system (their progress and effort), reporting it back to the teacher and to the child so it’s clear what their strengths and weaknesses are and how hard they are working.
  4. HegartyMaths allows a parent to see everything their child needs to learn and support them. Often parents who may be unsure of the schools methods like to watch the videos along with their child and understand the techniques their child needs to know.
  5. HegartyMaths remembers all the child’s mistakes and gives them practice on their weaknesses so they can do impactful independent learning.
